Written by Haven Patricia Lawson

lyrics

The civil war had just been o'er,
the south was beaten badly,
and Blanche, she stood upon their land
surveyed the damage sadly,
She had no home, her house was gone,
her father's mind had left him,
and now, she promised God above
she'd do all to avenge him.

The Union officer stood tall,
his dark eyes were a gleaming
and little did he know just then the
treachery she was screaming
she'd make him hurt like she was hurt,
cause Union Jack would come calling,
the things she vowed to do to him
were terribly appalling.

Empty Promises, so long ago were spoken
Empty Promises, and now her heart is broken

He came each day to make his rounds,
to see how she was doing
she smiled and looked into his eyes,
the witchcraft she was brewing,
it wasn't long that love grew strong,
hate was not pursuing,
her dreams of John that lingered on,
would prove their sad undoing.

He rode one evening to the farm
to tell her that he was sorry,
that he must go back to New York,
but, for her not to worry,
But in the shadow of the dusk
her father saw that Yankee, and,
as John stepped up to the door,
the shot rang out distinctly.

Empty Promises, so long ago were spoken
Empty Promises, and now her heart is broken

Blanche hurriedly ran to his side,
bent down to kiss an hold him,
and then she told him of her love,
that she would never forget him,
and with his last reserve of strength,
he whispered that he reckoned
that he would always love her too,
but, God above now beckoned.

His father came on a Southbound train,
the body to recover.
There'd never been a darker day for him and
John's sad mother,
but, when he got to Blanche's land,
he was amazed to find there,
2 graves, one tombstone clearly said
"It's John and Blanche Forever".
